LOCATION: PASO ROBLES, CA.
ORTHOforma is a pediatric dental / orthodontic office, located on a sloping lot in a “Gateway” overlay in the City of Paso Robles, Ca; abutting the southbound lane of U.S. Highway 101 with existing mature oak trees along the northern property line. A site-specific / regional, approach is being utilized to address this challenging site located in a hot arid climate. Several design techniques are being employed to achieve this; from terracing the development “down the slope”, to implementing a double roof strategy, which shades the mechanical equipment and the upper roof while housing a photovoltaic system to power this all-electric-facility and reduce the carbon footprint. Other design elements, such as; thermal mass CMU walls with exterior rigid insulation; a cool, shaded micro-climate at the entry; large overhangs and at the windows to limit direct heat gain while allowing for natural day lighting; along with strategically placed windows, for views to oak trees, reinforce the site specific design approach. Integration of earth tone colors along with the metal siding / roofing allows the building to blend in with the natural environment and the regional, agrarian vernacular architecture, while providing a low maintenance structure. The design responds to the highway acoustically and visually, through the implementation of an earth berm, a high performance laminated glazing system, and simple bold forms for viewing from the highway.
